Easter Weekend in Obergurgl

Easter Sunday, 8th April

Skiing wise this all looked most unpromising. The clouds were low and the lifts were all closed except around the Steinmannbahn because of the wind. We were all concentrated there, so after a few runs including on the mysteriously quiet no. 17, we decided to catch the bus to Pill and try our luck in Hochgurgl. Good move! Both sections of the gondola were open and despite the wind we had quite a bit of pleasant skiing in breaking up cloud and improving visibility. A good lunch was also found in the Hotel Ideal beside No.25. A much better start to the week than we thought possible in the morning.

At the Top Mountain Star

Easter Monday, 9th April

A bright and pleasant start, so with cloud forecast we set off for Wurmkogel with as much haste as we could muster, determined to seize the opportunity to enjoy the view from Top Mountain Star. We were rewarded with fine vistas and not too much wind.

Fortified by our excellent Edelweiss und Gurgl breakfast, we all had courage for the steep black run from the top. This was the first attempt for Airlie. She was going to go round on the easier route, but at the last minute she took courage and went for it, getting down in very good order. The snow was excellent.

We then went all the way down to the bottom at Pill, on good snow into hard icy piste then back into something a little softer as we got into run 32 from 36. Back up again, then into the Schermerbahn bowl where apart from the very top it was very hard and crunchy, with flat light from the promised cloud. So back to Festkogel and lunch, with the weather being much brighter again on the Obergurgl side of Top Express.

So a lovely afternoon skiing Festkogel then back down to the bottom of Hohe Mut Bahn to finish a great day.
