A Vacation Spot for People with Allergies
A perfect destination for those with pollen allergies
The inner Oetz Valley is blessed with its own microclimate. Protected by the high mountain ranges in the North and South, precipitation amounts to only 800 mm a year, about half as much as in the Bavarian Alps. The region has 10 percent more sunshine than Bolzano to the South.
The Merano Basin influences the climate in the Southern Oetz Valley Alpenhauptkamm range with its moderate temperatures. The tree line goes up to 2,400 meters in Obergurgl-Hochgurgl. Since the pollen count is much lower in this high mountain air, all allergy sufferers will have fewer problems, even during bloom. In addition, the air is too thin for bothersome house dust mites, which cannot survive at this altitude.
For years, the Institute for Botany at Innsbruck University has been analyzing the pollen count in Obergurgl with a pollen trap. Their analyses have shown that Obergurgl-Hochgurgl can be highly recommended as a vacation spot for people with pollen allergies. Following the example of renowned institutes for behavioral medicine, Obergurgl now offers asthma camps for children and teenagers.
A multi-faceted program will help young people adjust their behavior for asthma relief. Parents will also learn how to best handle their children’s condition.
