Timmelsjoch

Tyrol’s most scenic road beckons visitors with unspoiled natural sights

Tyrol is rich in beautiful destinations, which, in their pristine way, will provide you with a wealth of unforgettable memories. One of these special places in the midst of the mountainscape is the Timmelsjoch Pass. This “secret gap” in the Alps between North and South Tyrol has been used since the olden days, taking smugglers and tourists alike from the impressive glaciers of the Oetz Valley Alps to the Passeier Valley vineyards.

Go on a carefree joy ride across the Timmelsjoch High Alpine Road and experience the rich diversity of the Alpine region.

An overview of the land

At the autobahn exit Ötztal/Haiming you will reduce your speed and watch natural monuments pass by. On your drive through the Oetz Valley through Längenfeld and Sölden, you will pass Zwieselstein and take the backcountry road to just before Obergurgl. Here, the cemented High Alpine Road starts its 12-kilometer ascent to the Timmelsjoch at an altitude of 2,509 meters. Many beautiful trails into the Oetz Valley mountains start right along the road.

Once you have reached the highest elevation of the Timmelsjoch Road, a breath-taking panorama of North and South Tyrol awaits you. Sometimes a rough wind blows over the mountain ridge, giving you a sense of how close you are to the highest peaks. How drastically the landscape changes as you drive down to the Passeier Valley! There, the climate turns Mediterranean. Vineyards abound here. When you plan an outing to the Timmelsjoch Pass, you will travel through different vegetation zones, from lush Alpine pastures, to sturdy stone pines, mountain flowers, and gorgeous vines full of South Tyrol grapes. Once you have crossed the pass, you should venture into South Tyrol to Merano or even further South …
