Tips and tricks for your arrival
Windscreen sticker and toll
In Austria, you have to purchase a windscreen sticker to travel on the autobahn and motorways. It can be purchased for 10 days, one month, or one year. It is sold at all service stations and newsstands, which are called “Trafik” in Austria. The least expensive stickers are 7.5 EURO, a lot less than the 120 EURO fine that you will incur if you travel without it. On the Austrian part of the autobahn, the maximum speed limit is 130 km/h during the day, and 110 km/h from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. The autobahn is heavily monitored, especially on holiday weekends. The same applies to the Bundesstraße highway, where the speed limit is set at 100 km/h and town areas, where you may travel at a maximum of 50 km/h. We therefore suggest that you carefully watch your speed, especially in winter when ice and snow can cause accidents.
Large and heavy vehicles such as motor homes of more than 3.5 tons are subject to the truck video toll. You may pay this toll at autobahn rest areas and service stations.
A toll is also levied for certain pass roads and tunnels. This applies to A13 autobahn, the Brenner Pass or the Timmelsjoch Pass.
Winter equipment:
Once temperatures hit the 7 degree Celsius mark, you should put on your snow tires! No matter what the weather conditions are like, you will drive more safely with snow tires at these temperatures. B186, the highway leading to Obergurgl, is easy to master with snow tires. Only on a few winter days and in cases of extreme snowstorms are our snow ploughs not fast enough. On those days, snow chains are a must.
Our tip: Please purchase appropriate snow chains before you travel to Austria. The rest areas on the autobahn and the service stations are quickly sold out in case of extreme snowfall. In addition, it would be advisable to have an expert explain to you the proper use of the snow chains. You should also use a model that is specifically designed for your car.
You have to follow the specific instructions to mount the snow chains. They will only provide maximum safety if they are combined with snow tires. That’s also how the insurance company sees it. All damage caused by inadequate car accessories will not be covered.
If you arrive in extreme weather and our road is not completely cleared, we are very happy to help you. If you wish, we will arrange for one of our drivers to pick you up.
Obergurgl without a car:
If you arrive by train or plane, you need not worry that you will miss your car, especially in winter. You can get on the ski lift directly adjacent to the hotel. Your car would just sit in the garage or parking lot, anyway!
You can also rent a car in town or use one of our taxi services. In the summer, you can also rent a bike. If you like unusual modes of transportation, you can conquer the Oetz Valley on horseback!Hotel Cancellation Insurrance:
Whether you have to cancel your holidays or return home earlier than planned - this insurance package ist designed for your stay in Austria.
