Hotel Edelweiss & Gurgl in the Ötztal valley

The hotel in Obergurgl steeped in tradition

The history of the Hotel Edelweiss & Gurgl can be traced back as far as the 19th century. Indeed, the transformation of Obergurgl from an idyllic mountain village into a first-class holiday destination is closely linked to the development of our family-run hotel. Take a look at some of the most important milestones at the Edelweiss & Gurgl since its creation:

  • 1889 – Martin Scheiber, great grandfather of the current owner, builds the Gasthaus Edelweiss in Obergurgl
  • 1929 – Martin Scheiber's son, Angelus, takes over the business with his wife Anna and adds the adjacent "Gurgl" building
  • 1974 – Erich and Brunhilde Scheiber keep the business in the family and build an indoor swimming pool
  • Since 2003 Tanja and Lukas Scheiber have been in charge of the "E&G". Combining respect for the hotel's long and proud past with the courage to break new ground, they continue to run the business with the same spirit as their predecessors, inspired by the wishes of their guests.

A special connection to the Ötztal Valley

Above and beyond the village of Obergurgl

With its unique location in the heart of Obergurgl, the Hotel Edelweiss & Gurgl is the perfect vantage point for admiring the Ötztal Valley far below and the majestic mountains and glaciers high above – little wonder that for many generations the owners of the hotel have expanded their horizons by looking beyond the village and out into the world.

Even before he built the Gasthaus Edelweiss in 1889, Martin Scheiber founded the Ramolhaus mountain hut at 3000m above sea level. The first high-alpine refuge of its kind in the Ötztal Valley, it today remains a part of the Hotel Edelweiss & Gurgl and is an ideal base from which to explore the region's vast glaciers and rugged peaks.

Follow in the footsteps of pioneers

Angelus Scheiber was another member of the Scheiber family with grand plans. He added a second building that he christened "Gurgl", thereby giving the hotel its full name: "Hotel Edelweiss & Gurgl". The grandfather of today's owners also constructed a number of cable cars in Obergurgl and played a major role in the development of the nearby Timmelsjoch High-Alpine Road.

Today, heartfelt hospitality, the courage to break new ground and a deep love of the Ötztal Valley are the key ingredients that go towards creating the special atmosphere found in the four-star superior Hotel Edelweiss & Gurgl. If that sounds like the kind of place you would like to visit then get in touch and experience for yourself the magic of the Ötztal Alps!
