The start of the 12km Timmelsjoch High-Alpine Road is very close to the Hotel Edelweiss & Gurgl in Obergurgl and leads through Hochgurgl and all the way up to the Timmelsjoch pass.
At 2509 metres above sea level you can enjoy magnificent mountain views, from jagged summits to the dazzling sight of the sun reflecting off the glaciers. When the weather is good you can even see all the way to Italy and the beautiful Dolomites.
After pasing the highest point at the Timmelsjoch pass, the road crosses the border into Italy and leads down into the Passeiertal Valley famous for its Mediterranean climate and long wine-growing tradition.
With its unique landscape, the narrow Timmelsjoch pass between Austria and Italy attracts a large number of visitors every year. Whichever mode of transport you choose – car, motorbike or bicycle – it is the perfect starting point for a trip over the border to South Tyrol.
Along the road you will find exhibitions housed in eye-catching monuments open to the public, reminders of the history of the road as a secret smugglers' trail in former times. Many visitors combine a trip along the Timmelsjoch High-Alpine Road with a visit to Merano or other towns in South Tyrol.
The Timmelsjoch High-Alpine Road is open every day from early June until mid-October between 7:00 and 20:00.
