In 1881, Martin Scheiber – great-grandfather of today’s host – built the very first mountain refuge in the Ötztal Alps: the Ramolhaus. Perched majestically at 3,006 metres above sea level, high above the Gurgler Glacier, it remains one of Tirol’s highest-altitude mountain huts.

A place that inspires hikers, mountaineers and families alike – for starry nights, pure Alpine simplicity and breathtaking views of 21 three-thousand-metre peaks. These are the same things that continue to draw guests of Hotel Edelweiss & Gurgl to this special place.

The Ramolhaus is a destination in its own right – impressive, untouched, and far from the everyday. Today, host Lukas Scheiber continues the legacy of the hut as a licensed tenant of the German Alpine Club, with deep respect for its history.

How to reach the Ramolhaus

The Ramolhaus lies high above Obergurgl at 3,006 m – and is accessible only on foot. The hike is part of the experience, rewarding you with sweeping views, alpine quiet and an authentic hut atmosphere. The trail is well marked and suitable for sure-footed hikers – also manageable with older children.

Please note: The ascent requires solid fitness, sturdy footwear and basic alpine gear. In uncertain weather, we recommend contacting the hut or the hotel team in advance.

  • Starting point: Hotel Edelweiss & Gurgl / Hohe-Mut-Bahn valley station
  • Hiking time: approx. 3.5 hours
  • Elevation gain: approx. 1,100 m
  • Route: marked trail via the Ramolalm
  • Refreshment stop: en route at the Schönwieshütte
